Hand-carved from rātā, this pouwhenua draws inspiration from one of the most ancient of all Māori two-handed weapons.

Distinguished by its pointed kurupā and carved tīngongi, the pouwhenua was a weapon of precision, discipline, and skill. Similar in function to the taiaha, it was designed for both striking and thrusting, demanding speed, timing, and mastery from its wielder.

The tīngongi has been embellished with pākati tuarā kurī, a traditional design associated with strength, resilience, diligence, and perseverance. Inspired by the ridged spine of the kurī, the pattern serves as a reminder of the determination and commitment required to endure hardship and remain steadfast in one’s purpose. Together, these elements acknowledge both the martial traditions of ngā rākau a Tūmatauenga and the dedication required in the practice of whakairo Māori.
